The Consortium for the Protection of the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, born in 1981, is the only organization recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for the protection, supervision, enhancement and promotion of this extraordinary cheese from Central and Southern Italy, appreciated all over the world.

In 1996, the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana obtained the Protected Designation of Origin, the prestigious European mark with which the organoleptic and commercial characteristics of this cheese – deriving mainly from the environmental conditions and traditional processing methods existing in the production area – are institutionally recognized.

Purpose of the Consortium

• protecting the production and trade of the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana ;
• protecting the denomination in Italy and abroad;
• constantly improving the production means of the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana and consequently improving the quality of its production;
• constantly monitor the production and trade, specifically monitoring the correct use of its designation of origin


Among the institutional duties of the Protection Consortium, the monitoring over the finished product is particularly important.
The Inspection Section of the Protection Consortium has jurisdiction over the entire national territory and operates through a vigilant agent with the status of public security agent, collecting samples on the market and having them analyzed at the laboratories of the Central Fraud Prevention Department of the Ministry of Agricultural Food Policies and Forestry. In addition, when irregularities of its own competence are detected, the agent can raise sanctions and / or carry out administrative seizures of the product and / or packaging.

The most important PDO brand in Central and Southern Italy, the fourth nationally for production and the third among Italian PDO cheeses.


In 2020 50,677 tons of Buffalo Mozzarella from Campania were produced (+ 1% on 2019). Exports were 37%, mainly in France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The members of the Consortium for the Protection of the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO unanimously approved the Code of Ethics on July 27, 2012, during the annual assembly. The assembly was held for the first time in a property confiscated from the Camorra in Castelvolturno, which became the headquarters of the Centro di formazione nazionale del Corpo Forestale dello Stato.
After the introduction of the Code of Ethics, in order to be a member of the Protection Consortium one is required to submit official anti-mafia certification before the end of each calendar year. Furthermore, severe restrictions apply for those who wish to be part of the Consortium: they must commit to maintaining fair and loyal behaviour
