The Consortium

Supporting and promoting the magnificent simplicity of this extraordinary cheese since 1981.

Since 1981 the Consorzio di Tutela Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP has been engaged in supporting and making Mozzarella di Bufala Campana known throughout Italy and the rest of the world.

It is the only organisation recognised by the Italian Department for Agriculture, Food and Forestry for the safeguarding, control, valorisation and promotion of this extraordinary cheese from Central and Southern Italy.

What does the Consortium do?

  • Protects the production and trading of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP
  • Defends the designation in both Italy and abroad
  • Facilitates the improvement of manufacturing methods and product quality
  • Undertakes constant surveillance on manufacture and trading and, in particular, on the correct use of the designation of origin.
  • Promotes awareness of Bufala Campana DOP throughout the world.

We perform surveillance on the product for you

Amongst the official tasks attributed to the Consorzio di Tutela di Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, surveillance over the finished product is of primary importance.

The Consorzio di Tutela’s Inspection Department has jurisdiction over the entire national territory and works by means of surveillance agents who have the same credentials as members of the police force. The Consortium’s surveillance agents:

  • takes samples of the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana being retailed.
  • has samples analysed in the laboratories of the Central Inspectorate for the Suppression of Fraud, part of the Italian Department for Agriculture, Food and Forestry.
  • where there are instances of irregularities in this field, they can apply sanctions and/or administratively confiscate the product and/or the relative packaging.

The production chain’s traceability system

Since 2014, all those involved in the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP production chain must record how much of the product has been produced, transferred and transformed. In order to do this, we use a dedicated IT platform that provides guarantees to breeders, manufacturers and the end consumer. As a result of the combined efforts of the Institute of Experimental Zooprophylaxis in Southern Italy, the Italian Department for Agriculture, Food and Forestry, the DQA Certification and the Consorzio di Tutela mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP, the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP traceability system is both safe and transparent. Nothing is left to chance.

The SIAN (Sistema informativo agricolo nazionale – National agriculture IT system), provides the credentials for access to the website after consulting the BDN (National data bank) and the Tax Office to ensure that:

  • the user is IVA [VAT] registered.
  • the user is the owner of a livestock farm
  • the user is a producer, transformer or an intermediary.

Those not in possession of these requisites are prohibited from accessing the system.

Local Health Authorities, the Central Inspectorate for the Suppression of Fraud and the Police Force may access the data by means of a parallel system for consultation only (check track) and thereby prevent fraud in real time.
